In Shostakovich's 5th symphony, I expected Seiji Ozawa to exhibit more aggressiveness and impulsiveness akin to Bernstein. However, the Russian way of his rendition of the 4th movement remains remarkably gentlemanly.
As I watched this video - the first movement of the seventh is a joyous movement - I was trying to think if I could hear joy in the music. I don't think so, and the sour expression on Reiner's face wan't helping. Of course I believe he was ill in his last years with a heart problem. There certainly wasn't much joy in the lessons the Hungarian taught at Curtis, as Leonard Bernstein recalls.

Это уныло, тоскливо, примитивно, это НИ О ЧЁМ, просто бредовые идеи от крайне глупого мусоргского до бездарного насквозь прокофьева - о том, что музыкальными инструментами нужно имитировать всякую развлекательную чушь для детсада - каких-то птенцов, лысые горы, ворота, петю с волком, кикимор и прочие бирюльки. Horowitz of course is one of the greatest of all classical pianist and you seen one of the tricks of his greatness place the soft pedal down at all times when performing because it gives you more control over the keyboard I wasn't aware that Horwitz also did this but I'm not surprised very interesting video thanks so much for posting
@@josephhapp9 but that’s the musical aspect of soft pedal, but keeping it down all the time to literally give you more control sounds very weird. That to me just seems like not fully using the pianos sound, because you miss an entire 1/3 of all the strings, when the soft pedal is down
